A carbon first strategy shaped every aspect of the upgrade and was delivered under the scrutiny required for a Grade II listed building. Retaining the existing brick walls, steel trusses and concrete slabs avoided substantial embodied carbon emissions associated with demolition and new build replacement. It also met strict conservation requirements. Achieving contemporary performance standards within a protected structure required careful consultation, detailed sequencing and close agreement with heritage officers.

High‑performance fabric measures were integrated without compromising historic character. A sustainable delivery methodology minimised demolition, waste, transport and material consumption. A coordinated approach protected historic fabric, reduced the risk of carbon‑intensive rework and safeguarded long‑term performance.
